Radio observations of candidate magnetic O stars

چکیده

A number of O stars are suspected to have (weak) magnetic fields because of the observed cyclical variability in their UV wind-lines. However, direct detections of these magnetic fields with optical spectropolarimetry have proven to be very difficult. We have searched for non-thermal radio emission, which would be a strong indication for the presence of a magnetic field. Of our 5 selected candidate magnetic O stars, 3 are detected: ξ Per, which we find to have a non-thermal spectrum, and λ Cep and α Cam which show a thermal spectrum. We also find that the fluxes are lower than the expected free-free (thermal) contribution of the stellar wind. This is in agreement with recent findings that the mass-loss rates from O stars using Hα are overestimated because of clumping in the inner part of the stellar wind.

Flaring up All over — Magnetic Activity in Rapidly-rotating Late-type M and L Dwarfs

We present Very Large Array observations of twelve bona-fide and candidate brown dwarfs in the Solar neighborhood. The observed sources were chosen to cover a wide range of physical characteristics — spectral type, rotation, age, binarity, and X-ray and Hα activity — to determine the role of these properties in the production of radio activity, and hence magnetic fields. Three of the twelve sou...

Magnetic field measurements of O stars with FORS 1 at the VLT ⋆

Context. The presence of magnetic fields in O-type stars has been suspected for a long time. The discovery of such fields would explain a wide range of well documented enigmatic phenomena in massive stars, in particular cyclical wind variability, Hα emission variations, chemical peculiarity, narrow X-ray emission lines and non-thermal radio/X-ray emission. Aims. To investigate the incidence of ...

Periodic Bursts of Coherent Radio Emission from an Ultracool Dwarf

We report the detection of periodic (p = 1.96 hours) bursts of extremely bright, 100% circularly polarized, coherent radio emission from the M9 dwarf TVLM 513-46546. Simultaneous photometric monitoring observations have established this periodicity to be the rotation period of the dwarf. These bursts, which were not present in previous observations of this target, confirm that ultracool dwarfs ...

Multi-wavelength observations of isolated neutron stars

Forty years elapsed since the optical identification of the first isolated neutron star (INS), the Crab pulsar. 25 INSs have been now identified in the optical (O), near-ultraviolet (nUV), or near-infrared (nIR), hereafter UVOIR, including rotation-powered pulsars (RPPs), magnetars, and X-ray-dim INSs (XDINSs), while deep investigations have been carried out for compact central objects (CCOs), ...

The Rotation Period and Magnetic Field of the T Dwarf 2massi J1047539+212423 Measured From Periodic Radio Bursts

Periodic radio bursts from very low mass stars and brown dwarfs simultaneously probe their magnetic and rotational properties. The brown dwarf 2MASSI J1047539+212423 (2M 1047+21) is currently the only T dwarf (T6.5) detected at radio wavelengths. Previous observations of this source with the Arecibo observatory revealed intermittent, 100%-polarized radio pulses similar to those detected from ot...
